Sponsor a Teacher 10th Anniversary Celebrated in New York

ENGLEWOOD, N.J. — The 10th anniversary celebration of the Sponsor a Teacher in Armenia and Karabagh of Tekeyan Cultural Association (TCA) kicked off on Friday, May 7, at the Tekeyan Cultural Association Center here.

Members of the Association welcomed the Director of TCA Armenia Gayane Muradian, who is visiting the US and Canada to participate to the celebrations at eight chapters.

Very Rev. Vazken Karayan, pastor of Holy Cross Armenian Church of Union City blessed the ceremony. Hagop Vartivarian, member of TCA Central Board of Directors welcomed Muradian and presented to her the history of the TCA Chapter and the synopsis of the cultural work of the Association.

Muradian has been a member of TCA Armenia since its inception, and in 2003 she was appointed the director general of the association. She is a graduate of Yerevan Institute as business manager and economist. Until 1992, she was employed as head of economy department of the Ministry of Governmental Planning. She was appointed executive director of the TCA Armenia in 1993 and has been manager of its theatrical group.

In 2003, she was a candidate for parliament representing the Armenian Democratic Liberal organization of Armenia.

Since 2000, Muradian has been the coordinator of the Sponsor a Teacher Program in Armenia and Karabagh.

Muradian emphasized that the program helps encourage teachers in Armenia and Karabagh not only by helping them financially, but by making them realize that their brothers and sisters in the diaspora value them. She noted many students want to study in Tekeyan
schools because of the teachers’ high quality and many teachers apply for positions at the schools.

At the end, Vartan Ilandjian presented a documentary video prepared specially for the 10th anniversary celebration.

During her visit to New York, Muradian visited the St. Vartan Cathedral and met with Archbishop Khajag Barsamian, Primate of the
Diocese of the Armenian Church of America (Eastern), visited the United Nations’ Armenian Embassy and met Ambassador Garen Nazarian, Armenia’s ambassador to the UN.
