Soldier Killed on Border after Azeri Incursion into Artsakh

YEREVAN (Hetq and Armenpress) — An attempted incursion of Azerbaijani military forces into Artsakh late last night January 20 was repelled by units of the Artsakh Army. In the ensuing battle Junior Sergeant Armen Hovhannisyan was killed.

The foreign ministers of Armenia and Artsakh met on Tuesday in Yerevan to discuss the previous night’s attempted incursion into Artsakh by Azerbaijani military forces.

Foreign Minister Eduard Nalbandian and Artsakh Foreign Minister Karen Mirzoyan described the incident as the latest in a series of Azerbaijani military provocations that reflect Baku’s continued irresponsible foreign policy.

The two also described the incident as an attempt to obstruct a negotiations meeting between the foreign minister of Armenia and Azerbaijan scheduled for this week.

The NKR Defense Army says it inflicted heavy casualties on enemy forces and material losses.

An investigation has been launched to reveal the details of the incident.

On January 20, Artsakh Republic President Bako Sahakyan signed a decree on awarding posthumously Hovhannisyan for bravery shown during the defense of the NKR state border with the “For Courage” medal.

He will be buried in the Yerablur Pantheon in Yerevan, according to Armenia’s Ministry of Defense.

During a visit to a local Yerevan school, Defense Minister Seyran Ohanian led students in a minute of silence for the Hovhannisyan.

“An ordinary unit of nine soldiers, at their position, repelled two special Azerbaijani units of 30,” Ohanian told the pupils. “Isn’t this heroism?”
