Jivan Gasparyan in Jerusalem Festival

YEREVAN (Armenpress) — Master of the duduk, the legendary Jivan Gasparyan, together with three other duduk players, Armen Kazaryan, Vazgen Makaryan,and Jivan Gasparyan Jr., will participate in Jerusalem’s Sacred Music Festival. According to the website of the festival, jerusalemseason.com, the concert of the Jivan Gasparyan Quartet is anticipated for September 3. The website of the festival provides background information on Gasparyan and his quartet, pointing out that Gasparyan, with over 70 years of musical experience, has won countless awards, performed concerts with different musicians all over the world and provided music for many Hollywood films.

Gasparyan was born on October 12, 1928 in the village of Solak, and started to play duduk when he was six. In 1948 he became a soloist of the Armenian Song and Dance Popular Ensemble and the Yerevan Philharmonic Orchestra. He won four medals at UNESCO worldwide competitions (1959, 1962, 1973, and 1980). In 1973 Gasparyan was awarded the honorary title People’s Artist of Armenia and in 2002, he received the WOMEX (World Music Expo) Lifetime Achievement Award. A professor at the Yerevan State Music Conservatory, he has instructed and nurtured many other professional duduk players.
