YEREVAN — On Wednesday, August 12, the Los Angeles women’s basketball team defeated Glendale, 84-70, at the Grand Sport Gym in Yerevan, , to win the 6th Pan Armenian Games championship.
A total of 6,352 athletes from 175 cities worldwide participated in 17 different sports competitions; that figure included 22 women’s basketball teams.
Los Angeles won their opening round games against Marseille (France), Anjar (Lebanon) and Cairo (Egypt). Los Angeles defeated Stepanakert (Artsakh) in the quarterfinals and Yerevan (Armenia) in the semi-finals, before defeating Glendale in the championship game.
Gold medal Los Angeles basketball team members are Ani Avanessian, Ariana Chipolone, Stella Ghazarian, Julie Haledjian, Ani Javardian, Liana Minassian, Diane Oganesova, Sareen Ohanian, Annie Tarakchian (captain) and Kristineh Zadourian. Tarakchian (Princeton University) and Avanessian (Portland State University) were named co-most valuable players of the tournament.
Carl Bardakian served as the Los Angeles head coach along with Zorik Isajane and Levon Altiparmakian as assistant coaches.
